The Rules of Flying

As I am sitting on the plane ride home from Chicago to St. Louis, the guy in front of me has officially gained the “#suckit medal.” If it’s not real then I just made it real.

Now, being 6′ 4″, I can barely fit in these damn economy seats as it is, but when you recline all the friggin’ way back, that’s when you reveal my pissed off-side. I have absolutely no room to put my tray table down. As a matter of fact, my mom offered to switch seats but I denied because 1) I don’t really feel like giving up my window seat and 2) I can’t get out of the seat as it is!

So what’s the point of this post besides a rant fest? Well, how about laying down some guidelines on what to follow the next time you fly so you won’t get a post that has an angry tone because of you.

1) If you must recline, don’t go all the way back. It’s just common courtesy to leave room for the poor soul behind you if they want to, oh I don’t know, put their tray table down! One or two notches should be good enough. But if your narcissistic soul believes that you absolutely need all the room to recline, ask before going all the way back. Or upgrade to first-class.

2) If you have kids, control them for Christ’s sake. My way up to Chicago was filled with a kid that kept kicking or hitting my seat the whole time. Granted I could have said something, but for some reason I have this enormous amount of patience built up in me. I think it’s mainly dealing with idiots on a daily basis.

3) DON’T YELL! I don’t want to know where you live, what the Bears did, or hear what you are planning with the girl, I don’t care. If I can hear you over the road of the engines in the back of the plane 5 rows away, shut up and sit down.

Now then, what are your pet peeves that show up when you fly?

Blog Action Day 2008: Poverty

If you’re reading this article, you have most likely never experience poverty. The Oxford dictionary defines poverty as, “the state of being extremely poor.” My definition of poverty is, “a condition in which you cannot afford the basic necessities to live.” Almost the same, but Oxford doesn’t define the effects of what poverty does to a person.

It’s a saddening thing in this world, but it’s all around us and most ignore it. The homeless guy on the street corner, the kid who can’t read or write, the family that is heading for eviction, they are all victims of poverty. The worst poverty statistics, however, deal with the children, and being a teen myself, I can’t imagine living in poverty compared to my lifestyle. It’s rather “posh” compared to the horrible living situations compared to what some children have to deal with. Listen to a few statistics from GlobalIssues.org:

Number of children in the world
2.2 billion

Number in poverty
1 billion (every second child)

Shelter, safe water and health

For the 1.9 billion children from the developing world, there are:

* 640 million without adequate shelter (1 in 3)
* 400 million with no access to safe water (1 in 5)
* 270 million with no access to health services (1 in 7)

Children out of education worldwide
121 million

Every other kid is living in poverty. Not just in African countries, as commonly thought, but all around the world. The fact that 1 in 3 kids don’t have adequate shelter or 1 in 5 don’t have access to safe water or even health services is outrageous! Organizations like UNICEF are trying their best to do as much as possible, but it only goes so far.

So what can you do?

For starters, you can get a few ideas from this gigantic list put together at BlogActionDay.org. A few that I want to reinforce…

  • Donate: Either time or money. Both are extremely valuable to organizations.

  • Don’t waste: Starbucks is great (seriously, it’s AMAZING), but perhaps take just a few days off and put that towards a donation to an organization.
  • Educate: Why do you think I’m writing this blog post? Spreading the word of how awful poverty is can only further its awareness throughout the community and cause somebody to take action because even if only one person takes action, that person can do wonders.

The world can be a better place. You just have to take part in it.

This Country is Splitting at its Seams

At the age of 17, it’s not good when you fear for your country. It’s also not good when you fear for both the present times for your country, but also the future of your country. And to be quite honest, I’m scared s***less.

As I’m laying around the house today, I’m in and out of comprehension because being sick is making me tired. But of course, I fight it so I can stay up to date with the world around me. I flip it on MSNBC (it’s habit, folks) and after all the commentary about how the world is going to end because of the economy, we get into politics. Namely, the McCain’s latest strategy. I think it’s all about one word: “ATTACK!!!”

Now, I know that in the last 30 days, it’s all about the dirty tactics and getting those undecided folks to decide on their candidates, but it’s getting disturbing out there. See said videos:

“Terrorist! Kill Him!”

Another one would be where somebody shouted “treason!” at a rally in Jacksonville, Florida. See the Huffington Post’s page (thanks for not making it able to embed. Jerks.)

Not to say that the Obama camp won’t be nasty, but they haven’t started yet. They’re still concerned with the economy\ as we should be because that topic is right here, right now. Not some connections with a terrorist forty years ago. Yes, it’s concerning, but for the love of God, people, we need to fix the present before we can start looking to the future!

Now then, to the real concern that I have. All this constant bashing back and forth on the news, in rallies, and even on Twitter is getting old and to be honest, scary as hell. I swear it’s like Dave Winer thinks the world will end up either nuked or on a collision course with the sun if McCain wins the election. And then GeekBrief.TV’s own Neal Campbell scares the hell out of me. Thankfully, he actually talks tech between politics unlike Dave which has been one tech tweet to 30,000 political tweets.

The constant bitterness and arguments can easily translate from the online world to the physical world, which would equate to riots and fights. Am I saying we’ll see a civil war? I think we have a good chance of discovering a real Cylon before that happens. Am I saying there will be the occasional fight on November 4th? My money is on it.

Combine the political terror that’s going on along with the roller coaster that is the economy and it’s truly a time to pray that this will be over with soon. The nation’s stress levels are as high as they’ve ever been and I don’t think they can take much more.

Now then, if you’ve read this whole thing, congrats. I’m going to take some more meds.

KSDK, #suckit. I don't need a new camera for DTV

Watch this video and see if you learn anything. I’ll wait.

No? Neither did I. And if you did, well… Then the comments here truly do apply to you. As Darwinism said, “If you gained anything from this story you are the reason McDonald’s has to ‘Hot’ labels on coffee.”

flag.jpg

7 years later, we still remember
Those who have served, those who have fallen,
Those who fought back, those who became heroes.

7 years later, we still remember
Where we were, what we were doing
Who told us, what we thought of first.

7 years later, we still remember
The chills that ran down our spine,
Those images on the TV.

7 years later, we still remember
And we will never forget.

Apple seems to be losing their luster…

apple_funnest.jpg

I swear that’s not a typo. See, check it out for yourself.

Apple, since it’s rebirth (aka, Steve Jobs returning), has been a company to be reckoned with during their famous keynote events, whether that be MacWorld, the World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC), or special events/Town Halls. I mean, you can’t claim too many events where people were extremely happy when they put a 56k modem in a laptop (see: original iBook). Or when if they boo somebody who is a million times richer than they are (see: Bill Gates). It’s been called the Reality Distortion Field, and its power supply seems to be draining rather quickly.

Let’s just set one thing straight first: I am NOT a market analyst; if Apple doesn’t release refreshed notebooks at a music event, I won’t say “OMG!!!1!!1! They failed! Lower the stock price more!”, partially because I’m an Apple stockholder. That said, let’s begin.

The iPhone. An amazing product announced two years ago this coming January. Ahead of it’s time and something some people have been waiting years for. This brought the number of people interested in Apple to a new high. Lots of people knew them for the iPod, but now an iPod with a cell phone built in? Sign me up. It was also the end of an era – an era where Apple can impress people at every event.

There isn’t much you can do anymore to gain the original iPhone hype unless you release a laptop that can fold into a tiny rectangle the size of an iPhone and still be as powerful as a MacBook Air. Everybody was speculating what it would all do. It had this shroud of secrecy around it as only a handful of people got to actually touch one before it was released. I mean, the display unit was inside a glass cylinder surrounded by throngs of people.

With Apple’s music event that took place this past Tuesday, it seems to be confirming my sadness: Apple is losing their luster. An iPod nano overhaul, iPod touch revisions, new iPod shuffle colors, and iTunes 8. We’ll start with the iPod nano.

Apple - iPod nano.jpg

First off: too all the 3rd Gen nano owners, I’m sorry and I feel your pain. If you own one (or an iPod touch), you know what I’m talking about. The all too-dreaded stainless-steal backing that scratches the minute you expose it to the air. Apple has been consistent on flipping between both all aluminum (2nd and 4th) and stainless-steal (1st and 3rd) so get the nano now if you don’t want it scratched.

The 4th gen nano is essentially just the 2nd gen the outside, just wish the wheel moved down, a taller screen, and it’s now curved with a curved glass screen to go along with it. It now has an accelerometer built-in to determine when to switch between regular music view and Cover Flow (think iPhone/iPod touch). It can also rotate when you are gaming, viewing photos, and watching videos. Comes in a full rainbow of colors, and can match your purse! Nothing much to gripe about, but it’s just not the original iPod nano announcement when we saw how thing it was.

funnest.jpg

Did anybody else’s eyes just start bleeding when they saw that? “Funnest”? FUNNEST??? Apple, you need a talk with your English department. Funnest is not a word. That said, there isn’t much that’s new in the iPod touch this time around. The casing (still stainless-steal for God-knows-why) is curved like the iPhone 3G and there is a slight chrome border around the faceplate to give it more of an iPhone look. Oh, and it apparently has a Bluetooth chip in it. Let’s not get into that, shall we? Wait, let’s shall.

When Apple announced the built in Nike+iPod receiver, they said they were using a proprietary 2.4GHz receiver. Little did we know, it’s a Bluetooth receiver. Something they reported that they can’t let the iPod touch 1st gen and iPhone models use because it was “proprietary” to the 2nd gen touch. So, you’re telling me that you could still have backwards compatibility on all the iPod nanos, but not include it for a device that has a frickin’ SDK? What kind of BS is that? I don’t care if you think that people could break their iPhone/touches while jogging; give them that risk. If they break it, you get more money. Tada, problem solved.

There are also new headphones with a microphone built in that apparently the iPod touch 2nd gen is now compatible with. Yes, a microphone. Opening up the possibility for a VoIP app on the iPod touch. Of course, Apple being the company they are, the mic isn’t compatible with the 1st gen touch, which is completely acceptable (it’s an engineering design issue), but if a VoIP app is released, what happens to the first gen iPod touch owners? Will Apple or a third-party release a microphone/headset adapter through the dock connector? Who knows.

Lastly, a word of advice. Apple, either stick with the music moniker or move on to the ultimate media device. You’re slacking on the keeping it all fresh. You’re just rehashing the same thing as last year.

4747ECEC-16C2-4B83-8E25-3CB5B0D89A4F.jpg

iTunes 8. Again, new features, but it’s nothing that will make you cry in happiness.

The biggest feature is arguably Genius. Genius scans your content library, sends it to Apple who analyzes it, and send information back to you.
AE5B43F7-3335-4106-A50D-BDAE7C6B2D90.jpg
What happens is that when you select a song and click the Genius icon (looks like an atom), it makes a playlist of songs similar to the one you chose. This is something I’ve been interested in when people don’t always suggest music that you are interested in. It can also recommend what songs to buy based on a song.

The next, and really last, feature is the album art grid view. It just lays out albums on your screen where you can click on the album and it starts playing. Just think of them as icons in Finder. Click it, it starts. That’s it. Woo, go Apple.

If you couldn’t tell, I was not surprised with Apple’s announcements. But overall, I have been disappointed with Apple lately. Leopard, at launch, was a buggy product and they’re already releasing another one, possibly, in January. People have been experiencing huge issues with the iPhone/iPod touch OS, and let’s not bring up the horrors of iPhone 3G day, please. That was bad.

If I were to send one line to Apple, it would be the last phrase of this blog post…

Apple, you need to shape up.

Chrome: It's not all shiny goodness…

Google Chrome - Download a new browser.jpg

Google: Why don’t we just rename the world Google? I swear, they know everything about us anymore. Your birthday, what books you read, the last four digits and security code of your credit card, what hair color you used… But must they really continue into our lives, further turning us into Googlites? (It does have a ring though…)

The mega-search kings and AdSense overlords released their first attempt in the browser world, Google Chrome. Why it’s called Chrome, I have no clue. It’s not shiny, so it’s not that. While we always appreciate a new browser contender, even though it is getting a bit crowded, I’m not so sure I want Google to now own my browser. It’s bad enough that I constantly use their search engine, have it as my homepage on my BlackBerry, AND have all my email go through them on Gmail and Google Apps. I’d like a bit of freedom, if you wouldn’t mind.

If monopoly’s could be declared on web services, Google should win that game easily.

Let’s get down to what Chrome does before I go into ripping it even more. Ok, to be honest, the only thing it really does is add shortcuts to your desktop for “your favorite web applications” (can we say Google Apps?). That, and the one-box Address bar/search bar is pretty nifty. But all of these other featured have been done in other browsers.

Disclaimer: I have not yet had access to Google Chrome as I don’t have a PC box at my ready.

Yes, I know Google is just trying to do the right thing and merge them all together into one splendiferous browser and I agree there should be one to do it all, but that’s what Firefox extensions are for, no?

One of the great things that Google did was build Chrome off of the WebKit engine, and from the early tests, it’s paying off. Chrome killed the other browsers in the speed tests and seems to be pretty speedy and snappy from reports I’ve read on my own. But does all this come at a cost?

CNet brought up three key points that are mentioned in EULA. The first; Google can automatically update and install Chrome.

“The software which you use may automatically download and install updates from time to time from Google. These updates are designed to improve, enhance and further develop the services and may take the form of bug fixes, enhanced functions, new software modules and completely new versions. You agree to receive such updates (and permit Google to deliver these to you) as part of your use of the services.”

I agree that we should be notified of updates and (if severe enough) bugged constantly, but must we really have new software downloaded and installed? Apple tried that with Safari and got slapped on the wrist. Google, take notes.

Next: More ads!

“Some of the services are supported by advertising revenue and may display advertisements and promotions. These advertisements may be targeted to the content of information stored on the services, queries made through the services or other information.

The manner, mode and extent of advertising by Google on the services are subject to change without specific notice to you.”

So… If the people praying for extension capability get their wish, does this mean that the possibility of an Adblock-like extension being DOA?

Finally: All your content are belong to us.

“By submitting, posting or displaying the content you give Google a perpetual, irrevocable, worldwide, royalty-free, and non-exclusive license to reproduce, adapt, modify, translate, publish, publicly perform, publicly display and distribute any content which you submit, post or display on or through, the services. This license is for the sole purpose of enabling Google to display, distribute and promote the services and may be revoked for certain services as defined in the additional terms of those services.”

…Where do I start with this? So, correct me if I’m wrong (that’s what comments are for), but Google is essentially stating that some content that you may view and send can be used by Google, thus essentially licensing your content without you knowing. Listen up folks: PRIVACY IS DEAD. It’s been dead for sometime, and this has made it as dead as a doorknob.

While I applaud Google for wanting to branch out (it’s a soft clap, listen closely for it), they’re taking a bad approach to it. If they truly wanted a revolutionary browser, they wouldn’t have done a Windows-only launch, to begin with. They also wouldn’t be selling their users out and gaining control of their content freely. I’ll give Chrome a try when it comes out on OS X, but in the mean time, no thanks. I like Firefox very much, thank you.

Why have I become so political?

Politics: It’s a subject I rarely discussed with people. Why? I honestly have no clue. Perhaps it’s because of my tendency to be shy. Actually, scratch that. It is because of my shyness. That’s one thing that I wish wasn’t a characteristic of myself. If I wasn’t shy, I would probably be a lot more open in public. I’m generally very open online in places like Twitter and FriendFeed and my blog for that matter, but public speaking has always been one of my great fears.

Well, since I’ve become active on Twitter, I’ve become a lot more vocal in both the online world and the real world (trust me, it’s there; look outside your window). I’m expressing my opinions much more freely, and not afraid to either. One thing I haven’t conquered is speaking in front of peers (strangers I can do, peers… not so much), but that’s for another blog post.

Since I’ve been following folks such as Erin Kotecki Vest (@QueenofSpain), Dana Loesch (@Mamalogues), and others who are extremely involved in politics, I’ve now been discussing them more openly and what better time to start than now? Especially with the elections in two months. Granted, I can’t vote, but I can still debate and express my opinion. That’s why I have a blog; that’s why I have a Twitter; that’s why I speak – to express my opinion.

I am a very open-minded person and try my best to weigh each side’s arguments and choose what is the best in my opinion. Others… Not so much. If I’m not right, I’ll defend myself and my reasoning, but if I see I’m completely wrong, I will admit my mistakes. Any person, let alone a leader, should be able to do that.

Our country is in a desperate need of having things set straight, and this election can either make or break the country. I won’t say I endorse either candidate over another because, to be completely honest, I don’t know who I’m for myself. I probably won’t say I endorse either candidate until a couple weeks before the election. I was an Obama fan, primarily because he came from Illinois and living in Illinois, I want to support the hometown hero, but some of his recent decisions (namely him supporting the FISA act) have made me seriously doubt his leadership skills.

Am I glad this change in me occurred? I can say with complete confidence, yes. It’s opened me up into a totally new field that I rarely got into discussions over. It’s also made me more social and open with others. Granted, I’m not to the point where I can start talking to a random stranger in public, but it’s all about making baby steps, isn’t it?

I need an intern…

Who doesn’t want an intern? Honestly, they’d be doing all your work for you AND not get paid. Best of both worlds, no?

Ok, small distraction aside, I have REALLY bad time management. Need an example? I had planned to write this post Tuesday. It’s now Thursday. Yeah, you get the idea. And it’s not necessarily that I just kind of drift…

….Away. It’s that unplanned events pop up (namely homework) and just kind of shove things that I want to do to the side. Blogging is my biggest victim of my oh-so-horrible time-management skills. Yes, believe it or not, a teen has horrible time-management… Please, sit down… I KNOW you’re in disbelief.

Now that I’m back in school, it’s gotten a little better. Summer was just a spontaneous happening. Seriously. Had a major trip planned in 5 days. Meetings in the afternoon had been scheduled that morning. At least with school I have a routine: Get up, get ready, go to school, come home, do homework. Sleep. Repeat.

circle_of_life.jpg

Our school does give planners out to help plan, but it’s mainly for our homework and not so much focused on after-school activities. Which only makes sense, being that they want you to do well in school, but teens do have a life and some like to be a little organized. Just saying.

So… The main point of the blog post: What do you use to organize your time and what do you suggest? I do use my BlackBerry and iPod touch for things set forward in time, but nothing just seems “spontaneous” enough for the spontaneous plans that may arise.

I’m calling on you! Help! Please?

From the iPod touch

So this is my first blog post from my iPod touch from the newly released WordPress app. It is very very simple, almost as simple as it can get. You input a title, tags, choose your categories, and then start typing out your thoughts for the world to see. Pretty cool, huh?

One major thing I am seeing included is the ability to post images. For instance, here’s a screenshot: Oh wait, never mind. You can’t post images in certain parts of your posts. All the images will default to the bottom. Feature request number 1.

Since I got my iPod touch, it has really changed my mind on how I think of the future of mobility. I was one of the CrackBerry addicts, and for that matter still am. Now that I have an iPod touch (with the 2.0 firmware, mind you), I absolutely see this as the platform of the future. The iPhone architecture is a very robust one since it is built off of OS X.

Honestly, who doesn’t want a full featured Internet experience in your pocket wherever you go? You can argue that you can with Opera Mini on various devices or HTML on Windows Mobile and soon to be BlackBerry, but from what I’ve experienced, none of them render pages and emails so elegantly and true to the desktop experience as the iPhone.

You may call me a fanboy, but I disagree. There are faults with the iPhone software and I still love my BlackBerry for communication needs, including email, texting, and even Twitter. iPhone 2.0 has many flaws in it’s software and it’s buggy as hell. I once crashed MobileSafari 5 times in one day. That’s pretty sad for reliability.

But the best part of 2.0 is the App Store. Otherwise I wouldn’t be typing this on my iPod tout, unless I submitted it through email, but that’s a pain.

The App Store is essentially a candy store for iPhone and iPod touch users with all of the apps that are available online. You’ve got tons and tons of games, including the super-hyped Super Monkey Ball, an AOL Instant Messenger app, Twitterrific among at least two other Twitter apps, and just so many useful and fun apps. Now, that’s not to say there aren’t apps that suck; there are plenty of those. But if you generally stick with the well known and most downloaded apps, you’ll be good.

So while this post has been a bit random, so is my mind at the moment. Overall, here’s a summary: WordPress App = good for version 1.0. iPhone 2.0 = well worth it. There are a few other things I’d like to mention, but that will have to come at a time when my brain isn’t going in 50,000 directions. Look forward to that one… Whenever I get around to it.
